Why not just add another 4 drive enclosure?
Are you using PM enclosures now? your controller will support PM?
The cases are identical to some of my older SCSI cabinets, so I would expect it to be as loud and efficient.
They have a cheaper case with one channel and 5 drives (I leave out the center for ventilation and reduce more heat).
OWC carries it, I'd ask them.

It depends on your RAID controller, which use to mean 3-4 drives per channel, but with most of today's drives that hit 90-110MB/sec (WD Caviar 640 or 1TB) 3 drives per channel is probably a better number. If you have older drives and say 500GB models, might be okay to use 4.

I was about to buy either a pair of 5-drive or the 8 (too tall to fit where I want) to simplify and consolidate.

10.5.2 'broke' and changed how external drives mount and communicate. Sonnet updated their firmware and driver for their Tempo PM controllers, and I wouldn't worry that it won't work with 10.5.5 unless you hear - otherwise I think AMUG, Firmtek, Sonnet, and others would be pointing it out in their reviews.

Pros: Small footprint. Works well so far. Had to get this for my 12G SAS drives. Older TRX model didn't see the 12G drives at all.
Cons: Front has a push button power switch unlike the power switch on the back of the older model. not a fan of push button power. they tend to fail more than toggle switches.
Main fan is smart, so supposedly only runs when needed. A couple drives got disturbingly warm before the fan kicked in, although SansDigital support said you can set it to run all the time.

Other Thoughts: This has drive trays, but Just an inch longer and a little wider than the old TRX case from SansDigital
Waiting for a 12g SAS controller bracket so I can use my non-raid 9300-8e. With a SFF-8088 to SFF-8466 cable, connected to a 9285cv-8e raid card, the enclosure works fine with four 6tb 12g drives in raid0 as a test. Got 180 MB/s sustained rate transferring large files.

Not as good as the old TR4X6G11/22/2017 10:37:48 AM
Pros: TR4X12G has drive caddies. It makes it easy to pull out the drives. The old TR4X6G has no caddies.
12G drives support. I have not tested it with 12G SAS drives yet.

Cons: Top caddy and bottom caddy are not easy to pull out, they get stuck on the plastic bezel.
Plastic front bezel detaches from the unit when opening the door.
No drive locating capabilities.

Raid Controller Driver Intel
Pros: small, well built, and good looking -- and it handles my new 12Gbs SAS drives perfectly
Cons: 1st one was DOA - installed drives were not seen my the LSI 9300--4i4e HBA (host bus adaptor) .. played around w/ cables, slots, etc., and the Sans Digital folks finally said send it back ... Newegg was awesome ---- the replacement box arrived overnight and works perfectly
Other Thoughts: if you have any of the new 12Gbs SAS drives and want to do any of them RAID, you may find you need to update your older external drive enclosre (box) ... my RAID10 initialization kept bombing b/c of signaling issues via the older back plane ... then get this box ... works great!! ... BUT beware doing four 6TB Seagate Enterprise 12Gbs SAS drives as RAID10 ... took literally a week to initialize!!! ... i kid you not
